Tourists in Iceland are enchanted by the opportunity to walk across glaciers or thrilled to snowmobile across them. The Un-Glacier Tour—the only one in the world—is very different: meant as an ironic commentary, call to action and pseudo-performance piece all rolled into one. Dominic Boyer and I led the first Un-Glacier tour in summer 2018, accompanied by many members of the Icelandic Hiking Society. Our professional mountain guides, with GPSs in hand, took our group to see the glacial remains of Okjökull (Ok glacier). From the top of Ok mountain, you can see three other spectacular glaciers and Ok’s sister volcano across the way.
